National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) Originating in 1935 in Milwaukee, best known in the UK for defining the standards for the hobby including everything from couplings to DCC. Their magazine is brilliant.

British Railway Modelling Associations

Scalefour Society P4 Organisation - 18.83 mm gauge in 4mm scale
EM Gauge Society EM Organisation - 18.00 mm gauge in 4mm scale (excellent manual, now available on cd)
DEMU Diesel & Electric Modellers United - all things British - pity. Would be much improved if also catered for continental (well, American railroading at least!).
Double O Gauge Association Good idea and much needed but a long way to go.
N-gauge Society Great for advice about modelling in (UK) N-gauge
7mmnga 7 mm Narrow Gauge Association
British 1:87 (HO) If only that Hornby chap could have found a small enough electric motor to fit... (is it too late to change - it would make so much sense?).
