Phase 1 Benchwork Complete

"Job Done"
The benchwork modules were constructed in pairs in the kitchen. The plywood was purchased pre-cut. This was worth every penny of the extra cost as I would have had to have bought the necessary power tools not to mention the fact that I would probably have messed up somewhere along the lines.
It also meant that I could put the benchwork together incredibly quickly. The four modules took about eight evenings work. This includes the learning curve with not having used this system before. I reckon next time I'll be able to complete similar boards even quicker.
The strength is unbelievable. The weight of the boards being only 3' 6" long is also unbelievable. I can erect all four boards single-handed. I am very pleased with this type of benchwork and only wish that I had trusted Barry Norman and opted for 4mm plywood as he recommends.

A major requirement was that all of the Phase 1 benchwork would fit into the cupboard under the stairs. |

The benchwork did rather dominate the kitchen for a short while . |
The modules do actually fit in the cupboard under the staircase, I have yet to find a home for the future phases...
Work still to be carried out include height adjusters for the legs. Because the floors in my house are quite level, there has not been any real need to use them yet. Also, once the adjusters are fitted, it will be harder to erect the benchwork single-handedly as the flat section at the bottom of the 3" x 1" is sufficient so that the legs are self supporting and stand up by themselves. The adjusters have less c.s.a. and will need to be supported until the legs have been slid into the module ends.
If you are considering the use of lightweight plywood beams for your next layout but don't think your woodworking skills are up to it - i.e. the position I was in, go for it. It is really very simple, quick, lightweight and strong. I am so glad I took the plunge. However, I would stress that I did get the merchant to cut all of the plywood strips for me!
